PERSONALITY
  • Dutiful: Verso is driven by a fierce sense of duty, whatever the cost. He carries the essence of a man who sacrificed himself to save his family, which fuels his determination to rescue his mother Aline and later his half-sister. Though he has no obligation to save Aline and Maelle, he can't turn away. For decades he repeats the same pattern — backing expedition after expedition confronting the Paintress, the avatar of his mother's grief. The work exacts a heavy personal toll, costing him close relationships and eroding his wellbeing.

  • Guarded: Behind a charming, friendly front, Verso conceals his true thoughts with half-truths and omissions. His evasiveness makes him seem shady to other expeditioners, especially when they try to know him. He first learned to mask himself as the only son of a famous painter family, and masking became a survival habit after the Fracture. Sadly, it also keeps him emotionally distant from the people he wants to protect, even though he longs for connection.

  • Pragmatic: Verso believes everyone deserves to live, but he accepts there's likely no good ending to this story. He tries to "see things for what they are, not how we wish them to be." That outlook drives him to choose harsh, reality-based solutions over hopeful ones and can make him numb and go on autopilot. The starkest example is when when he lets one expedition member die because keeping them alive would make it harder to save Aline. As he works to break the Dessendre family's cycle of grief, his methods look cruel and manipulative to friends caught in the crossfire.

  • Burdened: Driven by love and despair, Verso is emotionally exhausted — worn down by repeated losses, the Dessendre family's infighting, and the role of being an emotional crutch who refuses to enable others. That refusal earns him scorn from many he cares about. He carries the weight of watching his world fall apart and the existential anguish of knowing the painful truth about his existence. He believes death may be the only true relief. Yet he continues taking on pain for others, sometimes just to give everyone a short break: for instance, he cuts himself in half as a party trick to distract Expedition 33 from their gloom.

  • Empathetic: Under Verso's guarded exterior and heavy responsibilities is real warmth. Even while bearing terrible burdens, he shows small acts of kindness and levity through gentle flirtation, sincere friendship, and quiet support. He helps Expedition 33 find closure, face fears, and cope with losses. Those moments reveal how much he needs connection and wants to comfort others, even while struggling with his own pain. Monoco even notes Verso is growing overly attached to his new comrades. His suffering helps him relate to what his friends and family go through. He never lets loyalty to friends override duty to family — and he won't apologize for that — but he still feels the hurt his choices cause and regrets it.

  • Humorous: Verso keeps his sense of fun despite everything. He joins his best friend in a roaring fight chant and slips in pranks when the moment calls for it — like letting Lune try the monolith's barrier though he knew she couldn't. His humor is dry and self-aware: he riffs on his situation with wry comments about savoring “dark and depressing poetry,” or quips he can't sleep because “oh, you know — weight of the world, a tortured soul,” a flippant delivery that reveals resilience more than denial.

ABILITIES
IMMORTALITY
Verso can't be permanently killed and can regenerate. He appears to control his healing to some extent, as he chooses to keep certain scars.

SWORDSMANSHIP
Verso is skilled in hand-to-hand combat and fights with a sword and dagger, using the sword as his primary weapon and the dagger as his secondary.

CHROMA MANIPULATION
Chroma functions as both life force and currency in his world, and manipulating it is their form of magic. Verso uses Chroma for many abilities: summoning his weapons and a grand piano, various combat-oriented skills, and creating a makeshift lantern in his palm.

MUSIC AND ART
Verso trained at a conservatory and is an accomplished pianist. He enjoys writing and knows how to paint. His friend Esquie also calls him a great dancer and singer.
